Beijing's largest and most spectacular temple. The original residence of Count Yin Zhen before he became emperor and moved to the Forbidden city in 1723. In 1744 it became a lamasery for monks from Mongolia and Tibet. The last hall, Wanfu Pavillion, houses an 18m statue of Buddha sculpted out of a single piece of sandalwood.

Chengde, the summer capital of the Manchu emperors, located 250 km north east of Beijing with a series of gorgeous temples. Puning Si or Temple of Universal Peace has an awe inspiring statue of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, the largest wooden statue in the world at 22m height made of 4 kinds of wood and with 42 arms.

Taian in Shandong Province, is at the foot of Mount Taishan. The emperors would start with prayers at Dai Miao before setting off for the climb.

Tai Shan, the most famous of the five Daoist saced mountains in China with its summit 1545m above sea level and the base at 150m in Taian. Based on the Chinese creation myth, in which Pan Gu, after creating heaven and earth fell mto earth from exhaustion. Tai Shan was formed from his head and it became the most revered of the sacred mountains. The climb covers about 6'660 steps for a distance of about 11 km. After an overnight stay the sunrise is not to be missed.
